California Wildfires: It’s Not Just about Fire & Police Personnel

Summary: The recent wildfires in Southern California once again bring to the news the monumental effort of both public and private workers who are called on to help citizens when a major emergency occurs. Fighting fires of this magnitude takes a tremendous logistical effort with many public agencies and departments participating. The Only You website (www.smokeybear.com/wildfire-science.asp) is dedicated to the science of wildfires. This website states, “Wildfire is one of the most destructive natural forces known to humankind. While sometimes caused by lightning, 9 out of 10 wildfires are human-caused. Put simply, ‘wildfire’ is the term applied to any unwanted and unplanned fire burning in forest, shrub or grass.”

What is the BOK?

The Body of Knowledge project is dedicated to creating a living reference that represents the collective knowledge of the Safety, Health and Environmental profession. While the preliminary work has begun, there is still more to do. The purpose of this website is to introduce subject areas that will eventually be part of the Body of Knowledge, and to gather feedback on the future direction, and ongoing assessment of what needs to be completed.
