Interdisciplinarity: Increasing Safety Performance

Summary: Successful OSH profes- sionals must possess a broad spectrum of knowl- edge from various fields and disciplines. In addition to the requisite OSH bases of knowledge, several other fields are directly applicable to OSH responsibilities. Diverse knowledge bases enhance injury preven- tion, hazard elimination or modification, and regulatory compliance. By incorporating non- safety-specific knowledge and research findings into the field of safety, OSH professionals become more interdisciplinary, thereby enhancing their ability to increase the level of safety in their companies.

What is the BOK?

The Body of Knowledge project is dedicated to creating a living reference that represents the collective knowledge of the Safety, Health and Environmental profession. While the preliminary work has begun, there is still more to do. The purpose of this website is to introduce subject areas that will eventually be part of the Body of Knowledge, and to gather feedback on the future direction, and ongoing assessment of what needs to be completed.
